As part of VT’s new BEST Program <http://info.vtc.vt.edu/best/>, two career development workshops will be held for doctoral students and postdocs in biomedical and health sciences on preparing Individual Development Plans (IDPs). The IDP process involves both self-assessment and preparation of a written plan that includes academic, scientific, professional, and/or career goals (these may be academic or non-academic). Through this process some trainees will identify areas where more information is needed in order to refine their goals and next steps- the BEST Program would like to help fill those gaps by connecting trainees to resources and subsequent career talks/workshops. 4. GRADUATE COMMENCEMENT CEREMONY

The Graduate School invites all graduating graduate students and their families to its spring commencement ceremony. The event will be streamed live on VT’s website. Doctoral candidates and their hooding professors should report to the Spring Road side of Cassell Coliseum to check in between 10:30-11:30am. Master’s, education specialist, and certificate candidates who are eligible to participate in Commencement should report to Cassell Coliseum between 10:30-11:30am and follow the signage to the check-in location in Gym 213. 6. CERTIFICATE PROGRAM ‘STRATEGY & MARKETING FOR EMERGING COUNTRIES’ IN U OF SAO PAULO – 1st posting
The courses take place in São Paulo, Brazil and offer an opportunity for students from all over the world to attend a 3-week certificate program and immersion experience. Students are supported by an extensive scholarship program, covering 70% of the expenses of the chosen course. Course components include: strategic and marketing aspects of conquering markets in low incoming countries; current economic scenario of Brazil and other emerging countries; sustainable development in emerging countries; and guided visits to companies and organizations. A ‘survival Portuguese’ class is optional. The program takes place in Jul, Aug 2014 and Jan, Jul, and Aug 2015 (5 program dates). Registration closes May 18. The Graduate Honor System is searching for a new chief justice due to the impending graduation of the current chief justice, Jordan Booker. Applicants must meet the following criteria:
- must be a graduate student in good standing who has been in residence for a minimum of one semester
- be able to serve as Chief Justice for at least one year while enrolled full-time in the Blacksburg campus.

10. ASSISTANT EDITOR WAGE POSITION STARTING FALL 2014– 2nd posting
Assistant Editor, Review of Middle East Studies (RoMES)—starts August 2014. RoMES is published by the Middle East Studies Association of North America (MESA) and based in the VT Department of Religion and Culture. It publishes book reviews, current reports, and peer-reviewed essays on the state of the art of the field for an international, interdisciplinary audience. The Assistant Editor will use MS Access database and Open Journal Systems to manage and edit book reviews, correspond with associate editors, authors, publishing companies, the editor and editorial assistant, and attend to other administrative duties. Excellent communication and organizational skills are essential; commitment is 10-12 hours per week. The Assistant Editor will begin training with the outgoing Assistant Editor in August. The GLC Student Building Manager works closely with the Operations Manager for Student Centers and Activities as well as the Graduate School to provide services to the patrons who use the GLC. Participants are needed for a study of international engineering graduate students’ experiences collaborating with faculty in the process of conducting research and writing articles for peer-reviewed journals. You will be asked some questions about your experiences during a face-to-face audio-recorded interview taking about an hour. Limited demographic information will be collected in a short survey. Participation is voluntary and confidential. Participants must be: international engineering graduate students of at least 18 years of age; finishing 2nd year in doctoral studies; with some experience working with faculty members conducting research and preparing a manuscript for publication in a peer-reviewed journal. 15. RESEARCH PARTICIPANTS SOUGHT FOR USER STUDY OF ONLINE RESOURCE IN BIOLOGICAL SCIENCES COMMUNITIES – 2nd posting
Participate in a 2-hour IRB-approved study to evaluate bioinformatics website. The study will involve eye-tracking with think-aloud. Preferred participants are undergraduate and graduate students from the Biological Sciences programs. Participants will verbalize their thinking about the website (positive and negative aspects about the website). At the end of the eye-tracking session, participants will fill out one online survey. 16. USER STUDY PARTICIPANTS NEEDED FOR FLEXIBLE INPUT STUDY – 2nd posting
18-64 year-old participants in good health and with at least a month’s experience in 3D modeling or art like clay, sculpture, fabric or other tangible mediums are sought to participate in a study on how you use, create and design objects using a flexible input computer system. For one max. 2-hour session, researchers will study how you use their system, what you create, and how your system applies to your expertise. The location is at Knowledgeworks II, and the times are very flexible to meet your schedule. If selected to participate, you will be asked to read a written consent form, and will be given a pre-questionnaire gauging your experiences with surface design, design, and art. The moderator will train you on how to use the system, and then you will be asked to design a set of scenes, concluding with a scene of your own creation. A video camera will be recording you and what you do. You will be given a post-questionnaire, and interviewed on the interactions performed. Audio will be recorded during the interview.
